Bio

Dr Andrew Welch is Program Director of the Bachelor of Visual Arts, School of Art Architecture and Design, University of South Australia, where he teaches jewellery and object making. In 2010, he completed a Doctor of Philosophy at The Australian National University and his thesis topic ‘Contemporary Processes and Historical Precedents For Handmade Crafts Practice In The Context Of Technological Change’ reinvigorated his interest in the handmade approach to jewellery making. He exhibits regularly, has been selected for several survey exhibitions including Contemporary Wearables, the National Contemporary Jewellery Award and the Contemporary Australian Silver & Metalwork Award Castlemaine (2015 / Sterling Silver Teapot). He has designed and made awards for clients such as the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (Stranks Medal) and The Australian Institute of Architects (James Irwin Medal).
